DOUGMISC [Doug's packet received mid-FEB contained many short articles which I hope to condense into one report. "(----)" indicates changes between reports. The letters he refers to in this first article are found in my GENGEOR.asc file. As in other things, Doug gets credit for everything but typos. LSS] Where to Look for Bloodline Connections Between our CLARKs and George Rogers CLARK by Douglas Tucker SEP 1996 Lucy Clark Moorman's 1786 letter to Thomas Moorman which men tions "cousin" George Rogers Clark implies that the foundation sibling connection _preceded_ Christopher Clark's generation. Otherwise, I believe Lucy and Thomas Moorman would have known the exact relationship. It is not as if these letters were written long after the people being discussed were dead. George Rogers Clark was only 34 years old in 1786 and younger brother, William, was an unknown teenager. John and Ann Rogers were still farming in the southwestern corner of Caroline Co. and Jonathan's wife, Elizabeth "Nancy" Wilson Clark was in her 80's but still active in Quaker affairs. Christopher and Francis Clark were dead but most of their children were still alive. If Christopher and Jonathan had been brothers, these folks certainly would have known. If there is a blood connection between our Clarks and George Rogers Clark, I think it will be found back in England. Does anyone have a clue as to the origin of the Clark family of Christ Church, Barbados who appear to have been living in Barbados as early as 1654? They appear to have been related to "our" Clarks and may be easier to trace back to England. Who Were the Correspondents Lucy Clark MOORMAN and Thomas MOORMAN? This is the first time I have seen the text of Lucy Clark Moorman's letters to Thomas Moorman, but I have seen other let ters (from Gov. James Clark of KY and from Mark Candler, son of William and Elizabeth Anthony Candler) that have made similar "cousin" claims for Moormans, Clarks and Candlers. But I am un clear -- who was Lucy Clark Moorman? I believe Moorman Hill was located on property along Totier Creek in western Albemarle Co. I think this property was acquired by Charles Moorman (1715-1778) from Bolling Clark in 1759. This was the Charles Moorman who was married to Mary Adams. Their daughter, Lucy (b.1741), would seem to be the prime candidate for the writer except for a couple of problems. My notes say that Lucy married Benjamin Johnson in 1759. Also, I was not aware that she carried a Clark middle name. She did, however, have a sister named Mary and was in a position to know about the exploits of the Adams family. There are two other possible Lucy candidates, but both are long shots. One is Lucy Clark Moorman (b.c1745), daughter of Andrew Moorman Jr. (b.c1715/18) and Sallie Clark (daughter of Francis and Cordelia). Andrew Moorman Jr. grew up in Henrico / Goochland Co. on his father's property that was adjacent to the Nicholas Stone farm and very close to the Hanover / Louisa Co. property of Francis Clark Sr. Andrew Jr. and family (including his father, Andrew Sr. and step-mother Susannah) migrated to Anson, Co. NC before 1750. I am not aware that Andrew Moorman Sr. or Jr. owned property in Albemarle Co. My notes also suggest that this Lucy Clark Moorman married a man named Crawford and remained in NC. The other long shot is Lucy Clark Moorman (c.1723-1798), youngest daughter of Andrew Moorman Sr. and his first wife, Sarah Clark, who most likely, was the daughter of Edward "the Sexton" and Elizabeth Clark. In 1786 Lucy was a widow in her 60's -- her hus band had been Capt. James Johnson (youngest son of John Johnson and Lucretia Massie). By 1786 Lucy Clark Moorman Johnson's home at "Old Town" in Pamunkey Neck, King William Co. had been turned over to her youngest son, James and his wife Lucy Ammon and I have no idea where Lucy lived out her widowhood although my assumption is that she stayed at Old Town with her son and daughter-in-law. Did she have a sister named Mary? Who Knows! But why would she sign her letters Lucy Clark Moorman rather than Lucy Clark Moorman Johnson? (Some of Lucy and Capt. Johnson's children migrated to Greene Co. Ohio between 1806 and 1813. They settled near the northern border of the county and named the village they founded "Old Town". That is still the village name and the story of this particular Johnson family and the history of the Old Town name is well docu mented in family material donated to the "Greene Room" of the Greene Co. Library in Xenia. Quaker merchant James Johnson, who migrated to VA about 1700 did name his original residence in VA "Old Town", but whether it was on Old Towne Creek is uncertain. It was located in Pamunkey Neck in what became King William Co. but which would have been York Co. before 1654, and New Kent Co. until finally spun off into King William Co. shortly before 1700. The property was still referred to as "Old Town" in a book on old King William residences and families, published in 1898.) As for the Thomas Moorman who received the letter written by Lucy, there are four viable candidates. One is Thomas Clark Moor man (1755-1845) son of Micajah Clark Moorman and Susannah Chiles. This is the Thomas who married Apahracia Hope and led the Quaker migration to Ohio. A second candidate is Thomas Moorman (1757 1801), son of Rev. Thomas Moorman (1730-1782) and Sarah Clark of Anson Co., NC. The third candidate is Thomas Clark Moorman (1769 1852), son of Zachariah Moorman and Elizabeth Ann Terrell, who married Elizabeth Cheadle. (The other three Thomas Moormans of the mid-18th century were dead before Lucy's last letter was written.) My "instinct" is that Lucy Clark Moorman was writing to Thomas Moorman (1757-1801) of Anson Co., NC who was married to Susannah Crew. However, the fact that these letters ended up in the hands of James Moorman of Winona, Mississippi offers no help as to the identity of the correspondents. James is dead, but was descended from Thomas Moorman and Rachel Clark. His line from Thomas and Rachel is as follows: (1) Thomas Moorman / Rachel (2) Charles Moorman / Nancy Hancock (3) Achilles Moorman / Elizabeth Smith Calland (4) James Calland Moorman / Nancy Keene (or Kent), (5) J. C. Moorman / Gertrude Shaw (6) William McAdden Moorman / ??? (7) James William Moorman / Gloria ?? (remarried, now Mrs. Gloria Middleton). I have talked with Gloria Middleton and James' sister, Beatrice Kidd. Gloria recalls little about her husband's genealogical work but believes she kept some "old letters" and a family Bible in her safe deposit box. She will check and call me back. Beatrice Kidd had James' genealogical chart and some hand written papers he had on the family. She is going to send me copies of what she has even though she feels some of it is barely legible. Unless Gloria Middleton comes up with the two Lucy Moorman let ters, none of this will help very much with firmly identifying Lucy Clark Moorman and Thomas Moorman. ----------------------------- Parents of Elizabeth Clark Anthony Elizabeth Clark Anthony, reported "cousin" of George Rogers Clark, was the daughter of Christopher Clark and Penelope Johnson and not the daughter of Micajah Clark Sr. and Judith Adams as stated by Wirt Johnson Carrington in 1917. Christopher's daughter Elizabeth married Joseph Anthony in 1741, 13 years before Micajah Clark's daughter of the same name was born. The Anthony's had a daughter, Elizabeth, who at age 14, married Wil liam Candler of Pittsylvania Co. They later moved to Wrightsboro, GA founding the CANDLER clan of GA. I think most of us are clear on this point but I have seen Elizabeth given other parents in print too many times to just let it slide. ----------------------- Andrew MOORMAN of St. Mathew's Parish, GA In _Abstracts of Colonial Wills of GA 1733-1774_, the following will is presented for an Andrew MOORMAN who died 20 DEC 1761. His will was probated 6 DEC 1762 and recorded 8 DEC 1762. Andrew Moorman Sr., Mathews Parish, planter, sons Gideon, Cornelius, Andrew Jr. -- all under 12 years of age. Eldest was Gideon. Wife was Catherine (Cataran). Wit: Thomas Keesee, Townsend Robinson, Sophero Robinson. A little digging in Anson Co. NC land records and will abstracts provides the additional information that Catherine Moorman was born Catherine Robinson, daughter of Charles and Sarah Robinson and possibly sister of the Townsend Robinson who witnessed the will in 1761. The following Anson Co. NC land record is helpful: 16 OCT 1754. Andrew Moorman to Charles & Benjamin Moorman, for L60 VA money...land laid out for William Stone, conveyed to Andrew Moorman by deed JAN 1752, and 50 acres adjacent to it laid out for John Hitchcock and conveyed to John Hall 27 JAN 1750 and then to Andrew Moorman...on east side of Great Pee Dee, adjacent Solomon Hughes and Thomas Moorman's land, 250 acres granted Stone 20 APR 1745, granted Hitchcock 25 MAY 1741. Signed: Andrew Moorman, seal. Wit: Charles Robin- son, Townsend Robinson. Some time ago I made notes (but kept no source information) from the will of Charles Robinson that was filed in Anson Co. NC, in which he refers to his "daughter Cataran (sic) who married a Moorman". At the time I simply wrote myself a note asking "which Moorman" since I had not run across Catherine Robinson before. Now the question is "Which of the Andrew Moorman's of Anson Co. NC married Miss Robinson and moved to GA?" There were three Andrew Moorman's that I know about in Anson Co. NC between 1750 and 1760. Andrew Moorman Sr. (1689-c1752) was present and literally "disappeared from the scene" about 1752 when his land was transferred to sons Charles and Benjamin. My assumption was that he died, but he just may have taken a young wife and run off to Georgia. He would have been 61 if he married Catherine in 1750 which conforms to the fact stated in the will that all three of their children were under 12 in 1761. Possible, but not very likely. Furthermore, why would Andrew Moorman Sr. name another son Andrew Jr. when he already had an Andrew Jr. by an earlier wife? Andrew Moorman Jr. of Anson Co. (c1713- ??) was married to Sallie CLARK, daughter of Francis and Cordelia Clark. We know from Fran cis' will that Sallie Clark Moorman was still alive in 1769 so that seems to rule out Andrew Jr. from the Georgia scene. Andrew Moorman II, son of Andrew Jr. and Sallie, was reportedly born in 1739 and seems unlikely to have been the father of three children under 12 by 1761. Furthermore, NC Quaker records have him marrying Ann DIGGS in 1761. So, there appear to be only two options to explain Andrew Moorman of GA. Either he was an old coot with a young wife or there was a fourth Andrew Moorman running around Anson Co. NC circa 1750. In the latter case, the only possible father of this fourth Andrew would be Thomas Moorman (1688- ??) the older brother of Andrew Moorman Sr. Someone out there must know more about this Andrew Moorman of GA. Linda here: Heather Olsen raised a question a few weeks ago which belongs here. She first referred to the report on Micajah Clark and Sallie Ann Moorman (CLKUPDII.asc) in which "Doug identifies two possible sisters for brothers Capt. Christopher, Edward and Francis -- Elizabeth who married Andrew MOORMAN (1689-1753) and Sarah who married Thomas MOORMAN (1688-1782) ... Andrew Jr., son of Andrew Sr....married Sally DIGGS and went to NC." Her ques tion is: "Do you have any idea who this Sally DIGGS was, any idea who her parents were etc.? I went through my DIGGS notes and couldn't place her. There was a daughter of William DIGGS and Judith (Haley) who was dismissed by the Quakers when she married a MOORMAN who was 'too near kin', suggesting an earlier relationship between the families, but I've never figured out exactly where the connection was--I'm wondering if this might be it?" Several of you are working these NC families; can anyone answer these questions? Patti Lamb also raised a question a week or so later along the same lines. As a way of introduction, she is a DIGGE and HAILEY researcher interested in NC MOORMANs and CLARKs because they all traveled together from VA to NC. John HAILEY is the father of her Judith who married the Quaker William DEGGE / DIGGE. She is working on: 1. Are John and William DIGGE / DEGGEs, brothers? What is the relationship? 2. Which HALEY brothers married which daughters of Francis CLARK Sr. and Cordelia LANGFORD? 3. Finding John HALEY's wife and John DEGGE's father. 4. The citation for wife of Andrew MOORMAN b.1686 in New Kent Co. VA. She notes many say he married Ann DIGGS, but she hasn't found this record. 5. She, too, is curious about the William and Judith who were married in 1758 in Louisa Co. VA; their daughter married John MOORMAN in Anson Co., NC and they were disowned for "marrying too close of kin". Along this same vein, Patricia Stanley is asking about the son of Thomas MOORMAN and Elizabeth (Simpson nee Clarke), also named "Thomas" but called "Rev. Thomas". His wife MIGHT BE a Rachel, but she's never found this "sourced" for sure. He and his son Andrew went to the Pee Dee River, Anson Co. NC OR Great Pee Dee River or Old Pee Dee River (depending on source) along with Ben jamin Dumas Sr. and others to start a Monthly Meeting there. They were part of the Cane Creek MM. She has children of this Andrew Moorman: Charles, John, Thomas m. Sally CLARK, Benjamin m. Lucy HADLEY (HALEY). Then from Hinshaw, she gives the following from Cane Creek MM SC, pages 410-411: 1752,6,6. Benjamin recf Camp Creek MM VA dated 1751, 11, 18. 1753.8.4. John recf Camp Creek MM VA dated 1753,4,20 1756, 2, 7. Thomas recrq 1765, 3, 10. Benjamin, s Andrew, m. Lucy Haley And while we're "down south", Patricia also sent the following on the Christopher Clark who lived across the Broad River from Gen. Elijah Clark in GA. This from "Clark Clues", page 31, on file in NC State Library, under 'General Elijah Clark': General Elijah Clark, born in Virginia 1733, married Hannah HARRINGTON in VA and settled first in NC, just over the VA line. He lived there until the Indians burned his cabin and posses sions. He gathered up his family -- son John C., daughter Polly and wife Hannah -- on horseback came to Georgia in 1772 and settled on the south side of Broad River and Long Creek in Wilkes County. He and his family are buried in the Elijah Clark memorial Park, created in GA in his honor. "GA gave him a large Planta tion, and NC gave a $30,000 gratuity for his military service." After the Revolution, he was Major General of the GA Militia. The fact that Gen. Elijah Clark and his family settled on one side of Broad River and Christopher Clark and his family on the other side of the river is "proof to many that they were related families" -- both families were from VA, etc. ..." (See pages 17 18 _My Ancestors and Descendants_, by Carl M. Smith for more biog- raphy on Gen. Clark.) In Pat's words: The Christopher Clark they are talking about is not the "great-one, the first Christopher Clark who m. Penelope Johnson ... but to me is Christopher Clark III who married Rebecca DAVIS. This Christopher Clark III is son of Christopher Clark II and Millicent (Mildred, Milla) TERRELL. This Chris topher Clark II is son of Micajah Clark and his wife Judith ADAMS. Micajah Clark is son of "the great-one", Christopher Clark and Penelope Johnson. Millicent TERRELL is daughter of David Ter- rell Sr. and Agatha CHILES, daughter of Manoah Chiles. David TER- RELL is the son of William Terrell and Susannah Waters.
