ROBERT ADDAMS and MOURNING ? by Linda Sparks Starr FEB 1994 Depending on the source, Robert's birthyear is given as "about" 1680 to 1690. He died cMAY 1740 (at least before 30 JAN 1741) in Goochland Co. VA. Contemporary deeds and land grants show his name with two "ds". Mourning is said to be a LEWIS, but proof of her surname, let alone which of the many LEWIS families she belongs to, has not been determined. However, the LEWIS surname is conspicuously absent in the list of their neighbors and people he deals with in court records. According to Mary Frances (Duncan) Bridges's pedigree chart, they were married 4 FEB 1712 in the area (Henrico Co) which became Goochland Co., VA. Mourn ing died cJUL 1765 in Albemarle Co. VA. Robert gave land to each of his children; although one dau was not named in his will, he gave her husband 400 acres in 1736. This Robert is not found in Nugent's Cavaliers and Pioneers, vol. 1 or 2. The following land grant references are found in Nugent's vol. 3; my "follow through" on the tracts comes from Goochland Wills and Deeds 1728-1736 by Weisinger, Goochland Co. VA Deeds 1741-1745 (Book 4) abstracted by TLC and Robert's will as transcribed in McNaught James Clark, Mansfield, Christopher Clark. [I have not seen abstracts of Goochland Co. Which specific tract they moved to has not been determined; however, we know the tract was bordered by a river on one side and a creek on the other, with a ridge making a convenient dividing line. Our thanks to Kay Bagonaff for pointing out the significance of some of the following neighbors. Some believe Mourning was the daughter of Elizabeth (Woodson) and William Lewis. George Payne married Mary Woodson, sister of Elizabeth (Woodson) Lewis; he had sons George and Josiah Payne, all of whom were closely allied with Robert Adams. John Woodson is probably a brother of Elizabeth and Mary; they were all children of Robert. His neighbors in the 1730's were Robert Burton, George Payne, Thomas Wadloe, John Sutton Farrar, John Woodson Josiah Paine, John Bellamy, Col. Harrison, Thomas Owen; he also owned land "...south side main Creek of Tuccahoe parting Cox and Robert ADAMS to Gilly Grew Marrain's line". Michael Holland sold land in 1735 to Thomas Meachan bounded by Robert ADAMS, Joseph Payne. His neighbors per St. James Northern Parish Vestry Book ... by Hopkins: "lines not processioned between Robert Addams and Leplad" Additional references in court records: Robert and John Bovrie were witnesses to a deed DEC 1726 John Sorrell to Sylvanus Pumfree. In AUG 1729 he appraised the estate of John Billamy with Nowel Burton and Sam Allen. per Adams Addenda: 11 JUN 1730 VA Council Journal ... Robert sued to stop patents of Richard Hickman, Edwin Hickman and Dennel Abney on two surveys of 400 acres on branches of Licking Hole Creek, Goochland Co. Weisinger also provides us with a list of vestrymen 20 MAY 1729 when they purchased land for a glebe ... Thomas Randolph, John Wood, William Mayo, Daniel Stoner, George Paine, William Womack, Robert ADAMS, Nowel Burton, Leonard Ballew, Tarlton Fleming, Henry Wood. Therefore, Robert Adams was not a Quaker, at least in 1729. McNaught provides a transcription of Albemarle Co. Deed Book 4, page 126 which Mourning Adams wrote in 1754 as her will: ... for 5 shillings to sons ROBERT and JAMES, all my goods, chattels and slaves--Toby, Benn, Moll, Sukey, Sarah, Betty, Charles, Brister, Edy ...to have after my natural life ... if they pay sisters the following amounts: to ANNA Sanders 40 shillings... to JUDITH Clark, 40 sh ... MARY Moorman 20 pounds ... ELIZABETH Moorman 20 pounds ... AGNES Ferguson 20 pounds, chn SUSANNAH Graves 20 pounds LUCY Graves 20 pounds ... ANNE Douglas 40 sh ... SALLY Harris 40 sh ... 24 JUL 1754 wit: John Bell, Wm Carrel, Lewis Cradock, Charles Coy. At court held Albemarle 8 AUG 1765, this deed was proved. From their wills, we learn the names of their children, birth or der of the daughters plus their spouses and a reasonable estimate of year of marriage. The birth order given below is different from everything published; however, I feel this is the correct order, for both Robert and Mourning named their daughters in the same order (with the exception of Anna "the elder" who was not named in Robert's will). According to Weisinger, Robert names this dau "Amie" when he deeds land to Thomas Sanders his son-in law. I think this is an error, for Robert refers to the second Anna as "the younger" in his will. Marriage dates other than those based on his will/her deed are from McNaught, Wulfeck or Adams Addenda, as is spouses for the boys. I omitted the "Anna who died young" found in many genealogies. Boys birth order below is arbitrary on my part. PLEASE NOTE: I ERRED LAST TIME BY GETTING THE MOORMAN HUSBANDS REVERSED!!! ANNA/ANNE b. c1713 m. Thomas Sanders cSEP 1736 JUDITH b. c1714/15 m. Farras aft 1776 Anna "the younger" may be an important clue. People often named the nextborn child after a recently deceased loved one. Is there an Anna in a nearby family who dies about 1725/6? They also named their eldest daughter "Anna/Anne"; an Anne Adams was taxed in 1704 in James City Co. per The Quit Rents of VA 1704 by Annie Laurie Wright Smith. Is this Anne Adams, Robert's mother? Robert does not appear in this tax list. Robert's father is said to be William Adams b.c1628, son of Robert who arrived on the Bona Nova before 1624. The Adams Ad denda says this William left only one record--that he was the son of the earliest Robert of Martin's Hundred. McNaught's account of this William and Robert Sr. is full of obvious errors. His parentage needs work; I personally haven't researched Hen rico records--but will soon for another line. Meanwhile, others are looking into LEWIS records searching for Mourning's parents- IF she were in fact a LEWIS.
