BMILLER.txt William "Billy" MILLER and and Eliza Jane CLARK by Linda Sparks Starr JUN 1999 William "Billy" Miller, born 8 AUG 1812, was the youngest child of Christopher "Christley" Miller and Sarah Jane "Jenny" Short. He was only three years old when his father died and had just turned four when his mother married Jacob Weatherholt. [1] In 1821 Jacob filed a petition for reinstatement of his Revolu- tionary War service pension. Within the affidavit signed by numerous Breckinridge County neighbors is this statement: "... he is now an old infirm and very much afflicted man, very ill able to work for a living for himself & family which consists of himself, his wife, two Daughters and a son who is a cripple ..." All Jacob's sons were married by 1821, so these children are Wil- liam, his sister Elizabeth "Betsey" Miller and half-sister Mildred Weatherholt. This is the only reference which suggests William was handicapped. William married 20 FEB 1832 Eliza J. Clark, [2] daughter of William B. and Eleanor (Pate) Clark. Her lineage is clearly spelled out in the following deed [3] dated 15 JUN 1839: "John W. Ball and Mary, William Miller and Eliza, Daniel DeJarnet and Mildred, (daughters of William B. Clark who was a son and one of the heirs-at-law of Thomas M. Clark deceased) to Michael Miller ... land on Hardin's Creek under Deed from heirs of George Claycomb deceased ... to which land the above named William B. Clark was entitled to one undivided seventh part. Now for ... sum of $15 paid to the said John W. Ball ... $15 paid to ... William Miller ... $15 paid to ... Daniel DeJarnet ... by Michael Miller ... 190 acres." What is left unsaid is Michael Miller's first wife (Nancy Clark) was an aunt of the above Mary, Eliza and Mildred. [See TMCLARK.txt and WMBCLARK.txt] 1 OCT 1859 William Miller "Sr." was appointed [4] legal guar- dian of Nettie Miller, more than likely the fifteen year old Par- netta, daughter of William's deceased brother Barnett and his wife Judith (Hendrick). William and Eliza Miller appear on the 1860 census owning $3280 in real estate and $12,225 in personal property. His occupation is listed as farmer. William "Billy" Miller died 26 JUN 1884 and Eliza J. 26 JUL 1886. They are buried in the "Miller Graveyard" which was located on the "Jefferson Miller place" and later, the Moorman Hendrick farm. (1988) William died intestate, which makes his probate records [5] more interesting, if less specific in identifying relationships. The following transcription of various records within his probate packet give insight to life in the 1880s: May 20 to Sugar 1.00 Rice 25 $ 1.25 " 24 " Lamp Complete .45 " 28 " 12 yards Gingham 1.25 " " " tea 25 thread 5 and Brown cotton 10 .40 " 31 " Cash 2.00 Jun 3 " Sugar 1.00 Rice 25 1.25 " 4 " Broom 25 Wash Board 25 .50 " " " Sugar 50 Granulated .50 " 5 " Coffee 1.00 1.00 " 6 " Relief .50 " 7 " 7 yards Print 42 & Pins 5 .47 " " " 1 # Soda 5 5 " 11 " 5 # Rice 25 .50 " 13 " 2 ?fons 5 " 17 " 1/2 # tea c 100 .50 " 19 " 1 Pair drawers 60 .60 " 21 " Sugar 1.00 Coal oil 20 1.20 " " " Matches 5 " 23 " One Pair drawers 60 .60 " 26 " 1 Shirt and colar [sic] 1.45 " " " 1 Pair drawers .60 ------- $15.17 Paid 17 Aug 1885 Sworn to before me this 17th day of August 1885 Wm.
